THE THREE APPARITIONS OF ELISAVET
The triple-branched maiden with a smile on her face followed them, accompanying them in the guise of a bat, as they pressed on. Finally they arrived at the city where they were to spend the night.

Pyotr looked at Roman Andreivich's letter. It seemed that he had not been an effective reporter but only a mere copyist.
One of the many tasks of a reporter is to report on events. "But what happens when the reporter himself has been tricked by the person he is reporting on?" Seville asked.

"Then you are going?" asked Seville. "But what are your plans?"
"Plans?" exclaimed Pyotr. "What plans? Nothing whatever."
Seville looked at him earnestly. "But what is the use," he said, "of your remaining in a country where you are known?
""I know no one here," replied Pyotr. "I wander about to avoid meeting anyone."
Seville made an impatient gesture. "This is hard on me!" he said. "You see, I am engaged to marry her."
"Who?" asked Pyotr.
"Mademoiselle Rachel, the daughter of Monsieur de Noblecourt," said the baron, proudly.
"Oh, I know her!" cried Pyotr. "I knew her when she was a girl of fifteen. She's very pretty now."
"Yes; and you must come to-morrow morning and congratulate me."
The baron took his leave, but not without first pressing a rose into Pyotr's hand."And to-morrow we shall have a long conversation," he said cordially. "You will drink tea with us at seven.”
